Calculators built by operators, not lawyers.
TheProfitCalcs is a free toolkit for the financial questions every small business owner, freelancer, and founder runs into: What should I charge per hour? What is my break-even point? How much do I owe in quarterly self-employment tax? How long does our runway actually last?
The site is built by a team of small business operators and freelancers who got tired of bookmarking five different bad spreadsheets to answer the same questions month after month. We have run a SaaS company, freelanced full-time, and managed inventory-heavy retail. We built these calculators for ourselves first.
Our principles:
- Math is correct. Every formula on this site is verified against published sources (IRS publications, state revenue departments, the Tax Foundation). Where a calculation could go either way, we tell you.
- Data is current. Federal tax brackets and SE tax rates are updated annually based on the IRS Revenue Procedure. State sales tax rates are reviewed against the Tax Foundation's annual publications. Verify before launch.
- No sign-up. No email gates, no "premium" tier, no upsell. The calculators are free, the answers are immediate.
- Ads stay out of the way. Display ads appear in two slots per page, never above the calculator and never disguised as content. Affiliate links to tools we actually use are clearly labeled.
- We are not your accountant. These tools produce estimates, not advice. For tax questions specific to your situation, consult a qualified CPA or enrolled agent. We try to be useful without overstepping.
How we keep this current
Tax brackets and the Social Security wage base are updated each January following IRS publications for the new year. State sales tax data is refreshed against the Tax Foundation's State and Local Sales Tax Rates report each spring. Self-employment tax thresholds, additional Medicare thresholds, and standard deductions are kept current against the IRS as part of the same January refresh.

What's next
The current 10 calculators are the launch set. Coming in Phase 2: programmatic per-state sales tax pages, common discount percentage pages (10% off, 20% off, 50% off and more), and a per-city local sales tax database. If there's a calculator you wish existed, let us know.
